NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION: Gymnema sylvestre extracts have shown positive clinical results in both Type I and Type II diabetes. Evidence from animal and human studies indicates that Gymnema sylvestre extracts accomplish glucose control by regeneration of the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. In a study on Type I diabetes patients given Gymnema, insulin requirements and fasting blood glucose were reduced and blood sugar control improved. A study done with Type II diabetics demonstrated improved blood sugar control and either reduced or eliminated need for oral hypoglycemic drugs.

Pterocarpus marsupium demonstrates cell protective and regenerative properties, as well as blood glucose lowering activity. These effects have been reproduced in numerous animal and human trials. In these studies, Pterocarpus marsupium reversed damage to the beta cells. The result was the almost complete restoration of normal insulin secretion. Pterocarpus marsupium has an insulin-like activity that is completely separate from the stimulation of insulin production from the repair of beta cells. Bitter Melon (Momordica charantia) contains several components with confirmed anti-diabetic properties. Charantin is a hypoglycemic agent composed of mixed steroids that has insulin-like properties similar to oral hypoglycemic drugs. Oral administration of bitter melon extracts have shown good results in clinical trials with Type II diabetes patients.

Alpha Lipoic Acid functions as a coenzyme in the body's processes that convert blood sugar into energy and has been used at high levels (>100 mg) with diabetics to control blood sugar levels. Alpha-lipoic acid also reduces the protein damage caused by high blood sugar due both to its antiglycation action and its powerful antioxidant properties. It has been used for more than 35 years to control the secondary complications of diabetes, including damage to the retina, cataract formation, and nerve and heart damage. Biovin® grape seed, skin, and stem extract enables connective tissue strengthening (e.g., blood vessels), and is an anti-inflammatory substance and a powerful antioxidant. It thereby can help prevent many secondary complications of diabetes.

Magnesium plays a critical role in cellular energy production and utilization and has been shown to be deficient in diabetics. Vitamin B-6 offers significant protection against the development of diabetic nerve disease, inhibits the glycoslyation of proteins, and synergistically works with magnesium. Vitamin B-1 plays a key role in the conversion of blood sugar into energy. Biotin is an important cofactor in the conversion of glucose into energy and at higher levels has resulted in the significant lowering of fasting blood sugar levels. Zinc is involved in virtually all aspects of insulin metabolism: syntheses, secretion, and utilization, and has a protective effect against beta-cell destruction. Manganese is a cofactor in many enzyme systems involved in blood sugar control and energy metabolism. Studies have found that when people with diabetes were given vanadium, they developed an increase in insulin sensitivity and could decrease their insulin requirements. Chromium is needed to make glucose tolerance factor, which improves insulin function.

Copper appears to offer some help against diabetes and may also improve wound healing. Vitamin A is needed for eye support and therefore may help to control secondary complications of diabetes. Bioperine® is a black pepper extract that has been shown to enhance the absorption of nutrients by 30-60% thereby increasing uptake of the nutrients in this formula. Diabetes Support Formula will be most effective when taken in conjunction with other core supplements supporting metabolism, including Mighty Multi-Vite!, Super E Plus Absolutely Essential Fatty Acids, Complete E, and Gymnema PRO-C.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid -
ALA has been used to improve liver health, treat diabetes-related nerve damage and help regulate blood sugar, prevent diabetic retinopathy (damage to the eyes done by diabetes), and provide protection against oxidative processes involved in the degenerative diseases. In addition to being a powerful antioxidant and liver purifier, Alpha Lipoic Acid has shown promise in several areas of medicine.
Alpha Lipoic Acid and Diabetes
People with diabetes are at greater risk for the development of cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, nerve damage and blindness. Diabetes is one of the most common degenerative diseases in the United States. Clinicians and patients in Europe who have used Alpha Lipoic Acid have reported significant reductions in complications associated with diabetes, including neuropathy, and cataracts . ALA has shown benefits in also found reversing diabetic neuropathy and in assisting the body ability to utilize glucose. There is evidence which suggests that ALA my help diabetics reduce their reliance on insulin.
Glaucoma and Alpha Lipoic Acid
Glaucoma is characterized by increased intraocular pressure (IOP) in some but not all cases. Some patients with glaucoma have normal IOP but poor circulation, resulting in damage to the optic nerve. Nutrients to increase glutathione levels and activity include lipoic acid, vitamins E and C, and selenium.

How Alpha Lipoic Acid Works

The body uses Alpha Lipoic Acid to help break down sugars to produce energy through cellular respiration. This is truly an "anti-aging" effect, as aging is accelerated by declining cellular energy production, free radical damage and other factors. Specifically, mitochondrial decay and the subsequent decline in cellular energy production of the body may be one of the most important causes of cellular decline in aging.

The antioxidant properties of Alpha Lipoic Acid also reduce the symptoms of aging. ALA appears to play a central role in antioxidant defense, soaking up and flushing out water-soluble and fat-soluble free radicals from the body . Alpha Lipoic Acid helps the body recycle other important antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, glutathione and coenzyme Q10.

Copper - The amount of copper found in the human body (50 to 120 milligrams) would probably fit on the head of a pin, but such a tiny quantity doesn't prevent this mighty mineral from performing impressive feats to promote optimal health. Among copper's many duties are fueling energy production; preventing anaemia and bone disease; fending off cell damage; and promoting proper foetal development. While copper is found in the far reaches of the body, it's concentrated in organs with high metabolic activity, including the liver, brain, kidneys, and heart. Copper now has an official Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) in the United States, underscoring its importance as part of a balanced diet. In January 2001, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences issued the first RDA for copper as a benchmark for ensuring adequate intake. Here's why.

Free radicals roam your body looking to make trouble by oxidizing healthy cells. Scientists say oxidized cells increase your risk of cancer and heart disease. Fortunately, copper plays a role in the body's elaborate defense against oxidation. As part of enzymes found in and around cells, copper helps the body neutralize free radicals to prevent cell destruction.

Copper is required to make connective tissue, which binds one part of the body to another; holds organs in place; shores up heart and blood vessels; gives skin its firmness, and bolsters bone strength. Copper's important role in collagen formation, a connective tissue in bones and skin, underscores that calcium and copper are vital to build and maintain strong bones. In fact, animal studies show that bone fractures, skeletal abnormalities, and osteoporosis are prevalent with copper deficiency.

Copper and iron work together for optimal well-being. How? Copper helps to convert iron to the ferric form, the most useful type, and also helps transport iron to, and from, tissues. A copper deficiency can result in anaemia and tissue iron overload.

The body cannot make copper, so one must get it from food or dietary supplements.
